Serie A

Global Football Divisions

Football in England is split into 4 tiers, with relegation and promotion being earned by the best and worst teams in each league. Italian football works the same except it operates with two main leagues, similarity to that of many European football leagues such as French and German football.

The top league in Italian football is known as Serie A. Just like other top footballing European countries, the Serie A is renowned for its high-quality football, but particularly its tactically, and defensively astute style of football.

Serie A History

Serie A, the top professional football league in Italy, was created in 1898. It has since become one of the most prestigious and competitive leagues in the world. The inaugural season of Serie A was held in 1929, with Ambrosiana-Inter (now known as Inter Milan) being crowned as the first-ever champions.

The most recent winners of the Serie A has been Napoli, who won the title for the first time in many years. They stormed the league early and won it with months to spare. Their title charge was spearheaded by striker Oshimen and new additions, Kvaratskhelia and Kim-Min Jae.

Juventus is the most successful club in Serie A history, having won the league title a record 36 times. Their dominance in Italian football has been particularly notable in recent years, as they secured nine consecutive titles from 2011 to 2020. They are also the club with the most goals. During their period of dominance they have been extremely prolific in front of goal and as a result hold the goalscoring record.

The player with the most all-time goals in Serie A is Silvio Piola, an Italian striker who scored an incredible 274 goals during his career, primarily with Lazio and Juventus. His record has stood the test of time and remains unmatched.

In terms of most all-time appearances, the honour goes to Paolo Maldini, an Italian defender who represented AC Milan throughout his entire career. Maldini made an astounding 647 appearances in Serie A, showcasing his longevity and remarkable consistency.

Gianluigi Buffon, the legendary Italian goalkeeper, holds the record for the most all-time clean sheets in Serie A. Throughout his illustrious career, which included spells with Parma and Juventus, Buffon managed to keep a remarkable 296 clean sheets, solidifying his status as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history.

When does Serie A start?

The new season of the Serie A begins on August 20th 2023, and runs until the 26th of May, 2024. The only gaps in the season come from international breaks, where competitions like the Champions League and Europa League are played.

Who will win the Serie A 2023-24 season?

The Italian league outside of Juventus, in recent years, has been a very competitive league. In many countries there are 1 or 2 teams who are consistently favourites and this was the case while Juventus were dominant.

Now, however, with Juventus falling behind, the league is once again very open. Anyone could challenge for the title. Inter Milan made it to the Champions League final and are consistently a very high quality team who will look to challenge. Napoli will of course look to cement themselves as an Italian giant by winning the league back to back. AC Milan won it the season before last and will look to retake their title. Then there are teams like Juventus, Atalanta, Lazio, and Roma, who are all very competitive teams who will be eyeing an opportunity at silverware.
