Europa League

Global Football Competitions

The Champions League is an elusive competition reserved for the best teams in the world. But what happens to the teams that just miss out? There is another European competition known as the Europa League that operates the same as the Champions League but features the teams in Europe who only just miss out on qualifying for the Champions League. The Europa League is not as star studded as the Champions League but still features some top teams and very high quality football.

Europa League History

The UEFA Europa League, formerly known as the UEFA Cup, is a football competition established in 1971. The Europa League is considered the second most important international competition for European clubs, after the UEFA Champions League.

The first ever winners of the Europa League were Tottenham Hotspur in 1972 after beating Wolves 3-2 on aggregate. Tottenham Hotspur are also the team with the most goals scored in the competition with 315 goals scored to date.

The team with the most Europa Leagues is Sevilla. They have never finished as a runner-up and with a 100% win rate in the final they have dominated the Europa League in the 21st century. They have won the competition back to back once and they have won it three times in a row. They have won the competition in the years 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2023. Sevilla are also the most recent winners of the Europa League beating Jose Mourinho’s Roma in the final.

The all-time goalscorer in the Europa League is Henrik Larsson with 40 goals and the player with the most appearances in the Europa League is ex-Inter Milan player Bergomi.

Sporting CP, despite not being very successful in the Europa League, has had both the most entries into the tournament with 28 and matches played with 193.

Who Will Win The Europa League in the 2023-24 season?

This Europa League is very difficult to predict with lots of top teams being entered this following year. Some of the teams we feel have the best chance include West Ham, Real Betis, Bayern Leverkusen, Liverpool, Atalanta, Roma, Brighton, Villarreal and Sporting. Teams like Real Betis, Bayern Leverkusen, Villarreal and Sporting are all teams in their respective leagues with high quality squads and are all in for a shout when it comes to who could go on to win the Europa League this following season.

West Ham have just won the Europa Conference League and will be looking to add another trophy to their cabinet this season. SImilarly this will be Brightons first ever season in a European cup competition and will therefore be sure to give it everything. De Zerbi has got Brihton playing some amazing football and as long as they are able to replace the players they are bound to lose this transfer window they will be considered one of the favourites.

Jose Mourinho is a proven manager when it comes to European competitions having won every major European trophy and making it to the Europa League final last season. For this reason they will also be favourites alongside Atalanta, a team with an abundance of quality.

The out and out favourites so far however is undoubtedly Liverpool. Liverpool are one of the top performing European clubs with multiple Champions Leagues and have been one of the best clubs in the world in recent seasons. It is important to note however that teams who finish 3rd in their Champions League groups are given the opportunity to enter the Europa League by beating 2nd place Europa League teams. This could mean the introduction of some massive teams that could shake up our predictions. In all honesty we wouldn’t be surprised if Sevilla get knocked out of the Champions League and go on to win the Europa League again.
