German Football Leagues and Competitions

The German football pyramid consists of 3 professional leagues and lots of non-professional region leagues beneath. The main leagues in Germany however are the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2.

The Bundesliga is one of the top 5 leagues in the world and has hosted some amazing talents in recent years such as Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho. They also have some very great teams playing in the highest league such as Bayern Munchen, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Leverkusen and many more.

Sadly the league has been dominated by Bayern Munich for almost the entirety of its existence with only brief spells of other teams being able to stop their never ending streak.

German National Team

Before we talk about the domestic competitions in Germany first we are going to take a look at the German national team. Germany alongside Italy and Brazil is one of the best performing national teams in the world.

The German style of play is built on physical prowess. The football philosophy is built on players with high work rates and efficiency, as well as big physical strikers who excel in the air. The German style of football looks to outwork and bully their opponents.

Germany have accrued a very impressive trophy collection over the years having won 4 World Cups and 2 European Championships. They have the second best trophy collection in the world tied with Italy. Germany also played some very fierce games against teams such as France, Italy and France. All of these nations are considered Germany’s rivals and create great games of spectacle. Germany also has a rivalry with Englaand however it is mainly pushed by England and is not taken as seriously in Germany.

Germany has had many legends throughout the years that have helped them win multiple trophies. Some notable players include Miroslave Klose who is the current top goalscorer with 71 goals, Lothar Matthaus who has the most caps, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neueur, Gerd Muller, Michael Ballack, and many more.

Today Germany is far from the team they used to be. Despite winning the World Cup in 2014, they have failed to make it outside of the group stage ever since. They have had some good runs in the Euros ever since winning it in 1996 however they have most recently been knocked out in 2020. Their current squad contains players such as Ter Stegen, Rudiger, Joshua Kimmich, Kai Havertz, Leon Goretzka, Ilkay Gundogan, Leroy Sane, Marco reus, Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller, and young talent Jamal Musiala and Youssoufa Moukoko.

German Bundesliga

The German Bundesliga is a relatively new competition being founded on 24 August 1963 which makes it 59 years old. There are 4 Champions League spots available in the Bundesliga as well as 2 automatic relegation spots. The teams that get relegated from the Bundesliga are replaced with teams from the Bundesliga 2.

The Bundesliga is a great league that creates great football matches with an attractive style of football. However it has been dominated since its creation by Bayern Munich. Some of the top teams outside of Bayern Munich include Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Leverkusen and many more. Bayern Munich are the most successful team with 33 Bundesliga titles and 6 Champions Leagues. FC Nurnberg are the second most successful team with 9 titles, however, they now play in the Bundesliga 2 and have for many seasons. Bayern Munich have won the league for the last 11 seasons. Borussia Dortmund won the league twice in a row from 2010-2012 and also almost won the league last season but lost out on the final day of the season.

The Bundesliga has hosted some of the worlds finest talents throughout the years including players such as top goalscorer Gerd Muller with 365 goals, Robert Lewandowski, Arjen Robben, Phillip Lahm, Oliver Kahn, Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, Thomas Muller, and many many more legends of the game.

Bundesliga 2

The Bundesliga 2 is the 2nd highest division in Germany and was implemented 11 years after the Bundesliga’s creation. The Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 both feature 18 teams. In the Bundesliga the top 2 teams are granted instant promotion to the Bundesliga whereas 3rd place is placed into a 2-legged playoff against the team that finishes in 16th place in the Bundesliga. The bottom two teams in this division are relegated and the 16th teams entered into a play off against a team from the division below. Nuremberg and Arminia Bielefeld both hold the record for the most promotion with 8 each. The league’s top goalscorer is Simon Terrode with 172 goals.

The DFB-Pokal is an annual German cup competition and is considered the second biggest trophy in Germany. The way this trophy operates is very different to other domestic cup competitions. There are 64 teams split into 2 pots. In pot 1 there are all 18 Bundesliga teams and the top 14 teams from Bundesliga 2. Pot 2 contains the bottom 4 teams from Bundesliga 2, the top 4 teams from 3.Liga and 24 amateur teams that earned qualification through regional competitions. It will come to no surprise that the team that currently hold the record for most DFB-Pokals is Bayern Munich with 20, the next team is Werder Bremen with 6.

DFL Super Cup

The DFL Supwercup is a German competition that sees the winner of the Bundesliga versus the winner of the DFB-Pokal. It was only recently reintroduced in 2010. Bayern Munich once again hold the record with 10 DFL Supercups. Borussia Dortmund are second with 6 trophies.
