Champions League History

The UEFA Champions League was founded in 1955 but was, however, rebranded in 1992. It has since become the most prestigious club competition in the world and is the home to some of the most dramatic and exciting games ever played. The first-ever winners were Real Madrid in 1955. Real Madrid is also the most successful club in this competition, winning it 14 times which is double the next team, AC Milan, with 7. Real Madrid dominated the competition in its infancy, winning it back-to-back for the first 5 years. They then went on to dominate again, most recently winning the competition in 2014, followed by another back-to-back spell from 2016-2018, and most recently winning it in 2022. Real Madrid are also the team to have scored the most goals in the competition scoring a whopping 1,047 goals. Barcelona, however, holds the record for most goals in a single competition scoring 45 goals in the 1999-2000 season.

The most recent winners were Manchester City, who won it for the very first time last season. Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola and with Erling Haaland leading the line, they went on to not only win the competition but also win the treble.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the player who has conquered the Champions League. Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals scored in the Champions League with 140 goals. He also holds the record for most goals scored in a Champions League season, with 17 goals in 2013-2014. Ronaldo is also tied second with a number of his Real Madrid teammates for the most number of Champions League titles. He has claimed 5 so far, both at Manchester United and Real Madrid. He is also the player with the most Champions League appearances.

Iker Casillas is the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in the Champions League, with an impressive 59, even surpassing the likes of Manuel Neuer and Gianluigi Buffon.
