Global Football Divisions

Football in America works very differently to the rest of the world. Instead of tiered divisions that teams can be relegated and promoted from, there are two leagues of which no relegations or promotions take place. The structure of Spanish football and football in Germany are different to the MLS, in which 29 teams are split into a western and eastern league depending on geographic location. The top teams from both leagues enter a knockout competition and the winner of that is crowned MLS champions.

Although a culture shock to many European football fans, this system has led to many exciting seasons. The MLS as a whole is a top league that many players strive to play and many footballing legends have also joined.

Major League Soccer History

Major League Soccer (MLS), the top professional football league in the United States and Canada, was founded on December 17, 1993. The inaugural season took place in 1996, with ten teams competing for the MLS Cup. The first team to win the MLS Cup was D.C. United, who emerged as champions by defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy in the final.

The latest team to win the MLS was LAFC who topped their league and then beat the Philadelphia Union on penalties in the final.

The team that has won the most MLS titles is the Los Angeles Galaxy. They have clinched the MLS Cup on five occasions, winning in the following seasons: 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, and 2014. They are also the team who have scored the most goals holding the record within the MLS.

The player with the most all-time goals in MLS history is Chris Wondolowski. He played for the San Jose Earthquakes and scored a remarkable total of 166 goals during his MLS career.

When it comes to appearances, the player with the most all-time appearances in MLS is Kyle Beckerman. The midfielder played for the Miami Fusion and the Real Salt Lake, accumulating a total of 498 appearances in the league.

In terms of clean sheets, the goalkeeper with the most all-time clean sheets in MLS history is Kevin Hartman. Throughout his career with teams like the Los Angeles Galaxy and FC Dallas, Hartman kept a total of 112 clean sheets in MLS matches.

When Does Major League Soccer Start?

The MLS has actually already begun and started on the 25th February 2023. The MLS functions on a different schedule to the rest of Europe and therefore has different fixture dates. The League is set to end late October, followed by playoffs, however reschedules and other events could potentially postpone this date.

Who Will Win The MLS 2023-24 season?

Based on the current standing teams like Cincinatti, Nashville SC, New England, St. Louis City, LAFC, and Seattle Sounders are the current favourites. Cincinnati and St.Louis City are the teams currently top of the league. This may not be the case forever as teams like LAFC will be gunning for that spot. It is important to remember that even if a team finishes first they still have to compete in the knockout round. Anything can happen in a knockout competition so predicting becomes borderline impossible.
