Manchester United History

Manchester United was founded in 1878 under the name Newton Heath L&YR Football Club. The club competed in the Football League for the first time in 1892 but was relegated after just 2 years. In 1902 the club was then taken over by a group of businessmen, and the club was renamed Manchester United. Under the new name, they won the English League title in 1908 and won their first FA Cup trophy just two years after. The club also moved into

the newly built Old Trafford the same year. Ever since then Manchester United have been a dominant force in English football

In 1986, Sir Alex Ferguson was hired as the new head coach. The first few years of Alex Ferguson’s reign were difficult despite winning the FA Cup in 1990. Over the next 20 years, however, he went on to win 25 major trophies, including 11 League titles. Manchester United won their first-ever League Double in 1994 and became the first team to win the treble in 1999. United also won three consecutive league titles from 1999-2001, a record that has only ever been matched alongside the treble by Manchester City.

In 2013 however, Sir Alex retired, and despite picking up a few major trophies in the coming years, no manager has been able to replicate his success. The team has been successful in cup competitions but has failed to win the Premier League ever since and has had below-average finishes in the league for their standard.

Who Owns Manchester United?

The current owners of Manchester United are the Glazers who bought the club back in 2005. They have endured an 18 year tenure spelled with various protests and a visible lack of trophies. The fans have wanted them out for a long time and they are currently in the process of selling the club. As of right now it looks as though investors from Qatar will buy the club however SIr Jim Radcliffe has been touted as another potential buyer.

Manchester United Manager

Manchester United’s current manager is Erik Ten Hag, a Dutch manager who arrived from Ajax. A disciple of Johan Cruyff who had previously worked under Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, Ten Hag is a very experienced manager. Erik Ten Hag had much success at Ajax, winning the league and reaching the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League with a very young squad full of homegrown talent. Erik Ten Hag had a poor start to the season becoming the first Manchester United manager to lose both their home games since John Chapman in 1921. He then went on to turn his fate around stat winning matches. 36 games in he had established the greatest win percentage of any Manchester United manager ever with a win percentage of 72% after winning 26 games from 36. He finished the season in 3rd and won the EFL and made it to the final of the FA Cup.

Who Plays For Manchester United Now?

Manchester United have a very capable squad that will likely aim to push for the top spot this upcoming season. They have recently let go of legendary goalkeeper David De Gea and replaced him with Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana. Their defence also consists of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane who formed a great partnership last season. They also have ex-club captain Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Their midfield used to be the weakest area of the squad but now it looks better than ever with players such as Casemiro, McTominay, Eriksen, Fred, Van De Beek, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount. Mason Mount is the most recent singing and will play alongside Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro which will form one of the best midfields in the league.

Manchester United are set to confirm the signing of Hojlund and his introduction will be a great one but as it currently stands they have a very young attack featuring players such as Rashford, Sancho, Garnacho,, Antony, Martial, Pellistri and Diallo who returns from an impressive loan spell with Sunderland.

What Have Manchester United Won?

The more appropriate question would be ‘What haven’t Manchester United won?’ Currently the most successful club in England, they have won many, many trophies throughout their history. They currently hold the record for most English 1st Division trophies with 20. They have the 2nd most FA Cup with 12, 2 behind Arsenal. They have 6 EFL cups, the 3rd most in England and 21 Community Shields. The team with the 2nd most Community Shields is Arsenal with 16!

They haven’t just been successful in England but have also won 3 Champions Leagues, 1 European Cup Winners Cup, 1 Europa League, 1 Super Cup, 1 Club World Cup and 1 Intercontinental Cup as well as being the only winner of the Bangkok Century Cup, a competition which takes place every 100 years. Manchester United 2023/24 Season Prediction

Last season Manchester United were very solid defensively and as a result were able to compete in multiple competitions and qualified for the Champions League. They could have won more however they clearly lacked a striker and relied on goals solely from Marcus Rashford. Next season they will look to replicate and build off of this success. If Manchester United are able to sign a quality striker like Hojlund then we can see them challenging for the league and going far in the cup competitions. If not they will likely have a season similar to last and challenge for a top 4 spot.
