Chelsea History

In the early years of its existence, Chelsea played in the Second Division of English football and gained promotion to the First Division in 1907. The team experienced mixed fortunes in the early part of the 20th century, and it was not until the 1950s that the club began to establish itself as a force in English football. Under the management of Ted Drake, Chelsea won the First Division title for the first time in the 1954-55 season.

After a period of decline in the 1960s and 1970s, Chelsea experienced a resurgence in the 1990s under the ownership of Ken Bates and the management of Glenn Hoddle and later Ruud Gullit. The team won the FA Cup in 1997 and 2000 and reached the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1998, which they won. In 2003, Chelsea was bought by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who invested heavily in the club and transformed it into a major force in world football. Under the management of Jose Mourinho, Chelsea won two Premier League titles in three seasons and reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2008. They have most recently won the Champions League. After this achievement the club was sold to American billionaire Todd Boehely and now the club looks to rebuild after some poor investment and an underwhelming season.

Who Owns Chelsea?

Todd Boehley is the current owner of Chelsea and has been since 2022. He came in and has had a very polarising tenure already. In his first season he signed multiple players for a lot of money and brought in Graham Potter. However, after having too many players and not having time for these signings to click, Graham Potter ended up getting sacked and Chelsea finished 12th. Todd Boehley now has to redeem himself and it’s looking as though he could thus far. So far this transfer window they have sold countless players while still investing in the squad further.

Chelsea Manager

The current Chelsea manager is Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino started his career with Espanyol before moving to Southampton. He guided Southampton to an 8th place finish, which was their highest finish since the early 1900s. He then joined Tottenham Hotspur and was a part of a heated title race and took them to the final of the Champions League. Despite not winning anything, he went to PSG. In his first season, he didn’t win the league, which was considered a failure, however he did win it in his second season. He has now joined Chelsea as he looks to guide them back into the Champions League.

Biggest Chelsea Transfers

After their massive investment from both Abramovic and Todd Boehley, Chelsea are now known for spending big money on players from around the world. Some of their biggest arrivals have been:

  • Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £121.00m
  • Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for £113.00m
  • Wesley Fofana from Leicester for £80.40m
  • Kai Havertz from Bayern Leverkusen for £80.00m
  • Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for £80.00m

Similarly they have had some big departures such as:

  • Eden Hazard to Real Madrid for £115.00m
  • Kai Havertz to Arsenal for £75.00m
  • Mason Mount to Manchester United for £64.20m
  • Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid for £60.00m
  • Oscar to Shanghai Port for £60.00m

Chelsea Drama

After the recent political conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Roman Abramovich had to sell Chelsea Football Club. This has been one the biggest Chelsea dramas as the club then became involved politically. Then Todd Boehley came in and exposed loopholes in players’ contracts to avoid financial fair play issues, so Chelsea has been under more scrutiny.

Who Plays For Chelsea Now?

Chelsea used to have far too many players, but after a hectic transfer window their squad is now more manageable. With that being said, they still have lots of quality players and they will likely do more business in the future. Their squad is very young and features quality defenders such as Kepa, Fofana, Badiashile, Colwill, Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Chilwell, Cucarella, Maatsen, Hall, James and Gusto.

Furthermore, their midfield and attack is full of high quality young players such as Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos, Conor Gallagher, Chukwuemeka, Sterling, Mudryk, Madueke, Nkunku, Lukaku Broja and Nicolas Jackson.

What Have Chelsea Won?

Chelsea have been one of the more successful English clubs in recent time, coming into success predominantly in the 2000’s after a takeover from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Since that takeover they have more than doubled their trophy cabinet. They now have an array of honours including, 2 English 2nd Tier Championships, 4 English Community Shields, 5 EFL Cups, 2 Cup Winners Cup, 2 Europa Leagues, 2 UEFA Supercups, 6 English 1st Division titles, 1 FIFA Club World Cup and 2 Champions Leagues.

Their most recent major achievement came in 2021 when Thomas Tuchel led Chelsea to their 2nd Champions League trophy beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final.

Chelsea 2023/24 Season Predictions

After a very underwhelming season last season, Chelsea will look to rebuild this season and push for the Champions League. This season, we at Balls Out Bet predict Chelsea will qualify for Europa League and could push for a Champions League spot. They have a good squad, a good manager, and no European football to distract them from the League. However, they have quite a young squad and as a result they might not make the Champions League but will definitely be in contention.
