Aston Villa’s History

Aston Villa was founded in 1874, and in 1888, together with 11 other clubs, founded the Football League. The club became the most dominant side during this era and continued to be a powerhouse in football until the outbreak of the First World War.

Shortly after the First World War, Aston Villa were relegated to the Second Division for the first time. They were then relegated to the Third Division in 1970 before the new appointment of Ron Saunders as manager. They made it back to the First Division by 1975 and won the First Division in 1981. They were then able to win the European Cup in 1982 in a shock result against Bayern Munich. Ever since Aston Villa have struggled for success and since the turn of the Premier League they have bounced form the Premier League and Champions League.

Who Owns Aston Villa?

In 2016, Randy Lerner sold Aston Villa to Recon Group, owned by Chinese businessman Xia Jiantong. After failing to secure promotion and facing financial difficulties, the club seeked investment from the NWSE group, an Egyptian company owned by Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris and American billionaire Wes Edens. They purchased a majority stake of 55%. Once they were able to achieve promotion it was revealed that NWSE had bought out the entire club and are now the sole owners of Aston Villa.

Aston Villa’s Manager

Aston Villa’s current manager is Unai Emery. Emery has had a great career at clubs such as PSG, Sevilla and Villarreal. Emery joined Aston Villa from Villarreal part way through last season. He took over while the club were in 11th and having an underwhelming season. He was able to turn them around and pushed for European places being 6th for a while before eventually finishing in 7th and qualifying for the Europa Conference League. He finished the season playing 27 games, winning 15, and having a win percentage of 55.56%.

Aston Villa Drama

In 2019 in a game against Leeds, Aston Villa player Jonothan Kodjia went down injured. They then stopped playing apart from a few Leeds players who decided to take this opportunity to score. This sparked a row which saw El-Ghazi get sent off. Bielsa then instructed his team to let Aston Villa score. It was a very intriguing moment and a great show of sportsmanship. This led the game to a draw and as a result Sheffield United had secured a spot in the Premier League next season.

Who Plays For Aston Villa Now?

Aston Villa have a very strong squad that is only getting better this transfer window. In goal they have World Cup winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. In defence, they feature many quality players such as Diego Carlos, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Alex Moreno, Matty Cash, Lucas Digne and new signing Pau Torres. Pau Torres is an incredible signing as he is a player that both Manchester United and Tottenham were wanting to sign a few seasons ago, however Villarreal were not willing to part ways with the defender.

They have a solid midfield with players such as Kamara, Dendocker, young talent Jacob Ramsey, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn and shrewd signing Youri Tielemens. He is another player who was rumoured to be getting a big move to a top club for many seasons however after Leicester City’s relegation Aston Villa have been able to sign him for cheaper than ever.

In attack they have Ollie Watkins who came into some great form last season and was instrumental in Aston Villa qualifying for Europe. They also have Buendia, Coutinho, Leon Bailey and Cameron Archer who returns after an impressive loan spell with Middlesbrough. They have also confirmed the signing of Moussa Diaby who is a fantastic player.

What Have Aston Villa Won?

Aston Villa are quite a successful club within England. They are much more successful than the majority of English clubs however their cabinet falls significantly short of English giants such as Liverpool, Manchester United and even Manchester City who have only very recently gained prominence. Throughout their history, they have won 7 English Championships which makes them the 6th most successful English club. On top of this they have won 1 Champions League which makes them only 1 of 6 English clubs to have won the prestigious European competition. They have also won the FA Cup 7 times which makes them the tied 6th most successful club in this competition. They have also won 5 English League Cups, 1 Community Shield, 1 UEFA Supercup, and 2 English 2nd Tier Championships.

Aston Villa 2023/24 Season Prediction

Last season, Aston Villa were able to finish 7th, securing a spot in the Europa Conference League. Under Unai Emery, Aston Villa continue to strengthen their squad with some very high quality players. Although Unai Emery has got them playing some fantastic football and we do think they will improve next season, so will other teams, and as a result they will most likely end up pushing for another Conference spot. Next season should see teams such as Tottenham and Chelsea back to their best and as a result they will push Villa down the table. Furthermore, teams such as Brighton and Brentford will continue to push up the table and will provide good competition for Aston Villa and will make it hard for them to break into European spots.
