AFC Bournemouth News

AFC Bournemouth is a club based in the seaside town of Bournemouth. They play their games in Dean Court, otherwise known as the Vitality Stadium for sponsorship reasons. AFC Bournemouth are commonly referred to as the Cherries due to their cherry red shirts and that the Dean Court stadium was built next to the Cooper-Dean estate which had many cherry blossoms inside.

They were promoted the season before last and were able to survive last season shocking the majority of football fans worldwide. Now, with their second spell in the Premier League, Bournemouth look to improve their squad and survive relegation once again.

AFC Bournemouth History

AFC Bournemouth was founded in 1899 as Boscombe St. Johns Institute FC and was then renamed as Bournemouth in 1923. This is also when they became a member of the English Football League. After playing in the 3rd Division for decades, they were then relegated to the 4th Division.

The majority of Bournemouth’s success has come very recently. In the last few decades they have bounced from the Championship to League 1 and back before finally earning promotion to the Premier League in 2015. They have since become Premier League regulars despite being relegated in 2020.

Who Owns AFC Bournemouth?

AFC Bournemouth is 100% owned by consortium Turquoise Bidco Limited after it was sold by previous owner Maxim Demin. Turquoise Bidco Limited is controlled by William Patrick Foley II. William Patrick Foley is an American billionaire businessman and philanthropist who owns National Hockey League team Vegas Golden Knights.

Within this consortium, one of the minor stakeholders is also American actor Michael B Jordan. Similar to Wrexham, Bournemouth have had an American Hollywood takeover.

AFC Bournemouth Manager

Gary O’Neil took over as Bournemouth manager last season and performed the impossible and managed to drag Bournemouth out of the relegation zone and not only provide safety but they also finished a very respectable 14th.

Once the season ended Gary O’Neil was unexpectedly sacked and Bournemouth have now assigned Andoni Iraola as manager. Andoni Iraola has managed some smaller clubs before taking over at Rayo Vallecano and staying there for 3 seasons. He got them promoted into La Liga in 2021 and then led them to finish 12th in the 2022 season and 11th in 2023. He performed very well with a smaller club in La Liga and was then offered the job at Bournemouth. How he will perform in the Premier League is unknown and whether sacking Gary O’Neil will come back to bite them is also unknown. What we at Balls Out Bet do know is that Andoni Iraola is an exciting manager who is coming into his biggest job yet.

Biggest AFC Bournemouth Transfers

The biggest AFC Bournemouth transfer of all time is Jefferson Lerma who was bought for £28 million from Levante. He has since gone on to become a club legend despite leaving for Crystal Palace this season. Some of the other biggest transfers have been Nathan Ake, Dominic Solanke and Jordan Ibe. Some of the most recent signings however include Hamed Junior Traore, Ilya Zabarnyi, Romain Faivre and Milos Kerkez. These are all some very talented young players who will hopefully come in and help Bournemouth strengthen enough to survive another season.

Some of the biggest outgoings in Bournemouth’s history are Nathan Ake who moved to Manchester City for £45 million. Then there are players such as Danjuma who moved to Villareal for £23.5 million.

AFC Bournemouth Drama

The only real drama to come out of Bournemouth is their decision to part ways with Gary O’Neil. Gary O’Neil’s contract had expired and he was receiving offers from other clubs so instead of tying him down to a long-term contract they decided to part ways and bring in another manager. This decision could decide the fate of Bournemouth’s upcoming season. It could prove to be detrimental as O’Neil had a great season last season. Alternatively it could prove to be a great decision if Iraola is able to come in and make an immediate impact. He was able to take Rayo Vallecano to 11th in his most recent season so if he can do the same he could be the right manager to establish Bournemouth as a Premier League club and even later push them on to European spots.

Who Plays For AFC Bournemouth Now?

AFC Bournemouth have been developing their squad very well over the last few transfer windows. Their attack features players such as Solanke who had a fantastic last season, David Brooks, Jaidon Anthony, Justin Kluivert, Junior Traore and Marcus Tavernier. They also feature players such as Billing and Cook in midfield. Their defence was very weak last season however they have strengthened very well in the last few windows bringing in Milos Kerkez at left back and Zarbaryni at centre back. Bournemouth are developing a strong squad that as of right now just struggles with squad depth. If they can manage their players well their squad should have enough quality to stay up.

What Have AFC Bournemouth Won?

AFC Bournemouth have only ever won 1 English 2nd Tier Championship and 1 English 3rd Tier Championship. They have had little success however now with new owners they are looking to establish themselves as a top club and try and win some more silverware.

AFC Bournemouth 2023/24 Season Prediction

This season we predict that Bournemouth will be in a relegation battle and may even get relegated. Their new manager is unproven in the Premier League and despite building a good squad its still not at a high enough level to compete at the highest level. They might be able to stay up due to other teams being weaker however we doubt they will comfortably finish mid-table or build on their previous finish.
