Luton Town FC

Who are Luton Town FC?

Luton Town is a club based in the town of Luton, England, home to over 200,000 residents. Luton Town FC is one of the longest running clubs with a rich history and, as of very recently, an incredible story. The club was founded in 1894, and three years later joined the Football League. They were only able to play 3 seasons before financial struggles combined with the intermission caused by WW1 forced the club to drop out.

The club were then able to rejoin the Football League in 1920 and establish themselves as a regular within the English pyramid. Throughout the years, Luton Town have had their fair share of struggles. Luton Town FC were penalised 30 points in 2008 and subsequently relegated from the Football League and from 2009-2013 they played in the National League. Since then Luton have been able to quickly raise their way up the ranks and have been most recently promoted to the Premier League for the 2023/24 season. The Premier League is the highest division in English football, and a very challenging league, too.

Who plays for The Hatters?

Luton Town FC’s club doesn’t feature many world beaters but instead features a wide cast of hard working players that the clubs fan base have come to love over the years. Although they may not be known widely, their fans have built, in some cases, year-long relationships with these players.

In goal, their starting goalkeeper is James Shea. Shea started his career at Arsenal, where he had loan deals away at other top clubs before joining Division North One club Needham Market, and then Isthmian League team Harrow Borough. James Shea has made his way from the lowest leagues and will now play in the Premier League. Another notable player is Jack Walton who has had short spells at a number of Championship and League One clubs.

In defence, they have players such as Dan Potts who was signed from West Ham in 2015 and has played for the Hatters ever since. A club legend at this point, he has made almost 200 appearances with Luton Town FC. Other notable players include Tom Lockyer who signed in 2020, Amari Bell and Gabriel Osho.

Luton Town’s midfielders include the likes of Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu. Mpanzu will definitely go down as a club legend being the only player to ever go from the National League to the Premier League with the same club. They also have players such as Glen Rea, Luke Berry and many more.

Luton Town FC have two main strikers who last season were in all the headlines; Carlton Morris and Elijah Adebayo. With a combined 38 G/A between them last season, they were able to strike up a deadly attacking partnership. Carlton Morris has been a journeyman so far in his career going to countless clubs on loan without being able to really make his mark. This was until in 2022, when The Hatters signed him. In the 2022-23 season Carlton Morris scored 20 goals and assisted 7 in the Championship. Then, there’s Elijah Adebayo, who started out his career at Fulham before moving to Walsall and eventually to Luton Town FC in 2021. He has made 100 appearances for the club and last season provided 7 goals and 4 assists in the Championship.

What is Luton Town’s stadium?

Luton Town FC play at Kenilworth Road, which has been Luton’s Home ground since 1905. Kenilworth Road has a capacity of 10,356, which although is enough to be allowed in the Premier League, is too small of a stadium for the leagues broadcasting and facility requirements.

Kenilworth Road has made Luton Town rather famous ever since their promotion with rival fans in the Premier League deeming it a laughing stock and too small of a stadium to compete with other clubs. The stadium is in the middle of a residential area, and on your way up to the higher stands, you can see into the locals’ back gardens!

A point of ridicule for some, but a badge of honour for many Luton fans. The small stadium, if anything, brings the already-passionate fanbase closer together. The stadium harkens back to their time in the lower leagues and adds character to their club and its history. Many other fans of lower league clubs are rooting for Luton as their story provides a sense of hope for many Football League fans.

Luton Town FC Fixtures for the 2023/24 season

In this section we will go over some of Luton Town FC fixtures for the upcoming 2023/24 season.

Brighton VS Luton Town

The first Luton Town FC fixture, as with many clubs, will take place on the 12th August 2023 and will be held against Brighton at the Amex Stadium. In their first games in the Premier League, Luton Town will be more than up for it. However, with the quality at Brighton, it will be difficult for them to come away with any points. As this is their opening game, the Hatters will be aiming to make a mark, but Brighton have qualified for the Europa League and are not an easy team to play against.

Luton Town VS Burnley

Luton Town FC’s next fixture that you should look out for next is at home against Burnley on the 19th of August. This will be their first home game in the Premier League. The home crowd will be noisy and it will be the Premier League’s first experience of such a small stadium in a long time. With Burnley being a smaller club it is also a great opportunity for Luton to secure 3 points. Of course, Burnley were also promoted to the Premier League this season, so these two teams played together twice last season. In one of these fixtures, it ended in a 1-1 draw, and the other saw Burnley win 1-0.

Luton Town VS Sheffield United

Luton Town will be in for a very challenging season in the Premier League, so fans will be excited for their first game against Sheffield United. Both Luton Town and Sheffield will sadly be relegation candidates so this game could make for a 6-point thriller. This Luton Town FC fixture is one you should definitely keep an eye out for, and again, is a continued battle from last season. Luton FC took 4 points from 6 in the last two fixtures.

Man City VS Luton Town

Travelling to the Etihad, home of the treble winners Manchester City will be on every football fans bucket list and now Luton fans have a chance to go and watch their own team. Points may be hard to come across in this fixture but it will be a game Luton fans will be dying to see nonetheless. We expect this to be a very difficult game for Luton Town FC, although these are the sort of games where upsets happen – maybe we could see another.

Luton Town VS Manchester United

Another Luton Town FC fixture is on the 17th February. In this game, Luton Town will host Manchester United. It will be an interesting spectacle seeing the biggest team in England visit the smallest in the Premier League. It will be very interesting seeing how such a big club will cope in such a small and noisy ground.

Luton Town Premier League Prediction

Luton Town’s journey from the National League to the Premier League has been one of the greatest footballing stories in recent times and we are all rooting for Luton Town FC to do well this season. Whether or not they will is a different question. They have a small stadium and a small budget and therefore many people are predicting for them to be relegated. However many people also see them as the dark horse for this season. It could be blind hope, as many people want the fairy tale to continue, but we will have to see. Regardless of this fact, they will be exciting to watch in the upcoming season.
