Montpellier History

Montpellier has a relatively short but eventful history in French football. The club spent its early years playing in the lower divisions of French football, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s that they began to enjoy success at the top level.  In 1990, Montpellier was promoted to Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, and they immediately made an impact by finishing in second place in their first season. This was followed by a period of decline, but in 1998, they returned to the top flight and established themselves as a regular presence in Ligue 1. In 2011-12, Montpellier achieved their greatest success to date when they won the Ligue 1 title for the first time in their history. Led by the goalscoring exploits of Olivier Giroud and the tactical nous of manager René Girard, Montpellier finished three points clear of second-placed Paris Saint-Germain to claim the championship. Since then, Montpellier has remained a competitive team in Ligue 1, finishing in the top half of the table on several occasions. The club has also enjoyed success in the Coupe de France, winning the competition in 1990 and 2018.

Who Owns Montpellier

The club is currently owned by Laurent Nicollin, the son of the late Louis Nicollin, who was the clubs president for over 40 years. Louis Nicollin was a highly influential figure in French football and was known for his passionate support of the club. Following his death in 2017, his son took over the presidency and has continued to run the club with the same level of dedication and commitment.

Montpellier Manager

Montpellier’s current manager is Michel Der Zakarian. Zakarian is an Armenian football manager who has managed Montpellier youth teams before moving to Nantes. He helped Nantes earn promotion to Ligue 1 and kept them in the top flight for 3 seasons. He then moved to Reims, Montpellier and Brest before moving back to Montpellier in February 2023.

Montpellier 2023/24 Season Predictions

This season we predict Montpellier will finish lower mid-table. They have recently let their top goalscorer go and have not spent the money they have received for him very well.
