Monaco History

AS Monaco has a long and storied history in French football, having been founded in 1924 by a group of local sports enthusiasts. The team initially struggled to make an impact, but they began to gain prominence in the 1960s under the leadership of manager Lucien Leduc. Leduc led Monaco to their first major trophy, the Coupe de France, in 1960. The team went on to win two more Coupe de France titles in the 1970s before winning their first Ligue 1 title in 1978.  In the 1980s Monaco continued to compete at the highest level of French football, winning their second Ligue 1 title in 1982. The team also reached the final of the European Cup in 1992, but lost to AC Milan in a memorable match in which Marco Van Basten scored one of the greatest goals in the competition’s history. The team won their eighth Ligue 1 title in 2017, and have continued to compete at the highest level of French and European football. Monaco is known for its attractive, attacking style of play and its ability to develop young talent, making it a perennial contender in French football.
