Marseille History

Marseillle’s history in French football dates back to 1899 when the club was founded. In the early years, Marseille played in regional leagues before eventually joining the professional ranks in 1932.  The club’s first major success came in 1937 when they won their first major Ligue 1 title. Marseille continued to be a dominant force in French football in the 1940s and 1950s, winning four more league titles and establishing themselves as one of the top clubs in the country. In the 1970s and 1980s, Marseille experienced a period of great success under the ownership of Bernard Tapie. During this time, they won the league four times and also achieved their greatest success in European competition by winning the UEFA Champions League in 1993. However, the club’s success was marred by a match-fixing scandal in the early 1990s, which resulted in Marseille being stripped of their 1992-93 league title and relegated to the second division. Marseille eventually returned to Ligue 1 and continued to be a strong presence in French football, winning the league again in 2010 and reaching the final of the Europa League in 2018.

Marseille Drama

Controversy constantly surrounds Marseille and its Champions League trophy. Marseille were the first winners of the rebranded Champions League and to this day the only French team to have ever won the competition. They beat a legendary AC Milan side in the 1993 final to secure the Champions League. In this same season Marseille also won the Ligue 1 title. To win the league they had to beat Valenciennes. In order to secure the victory they offered select players 250,000 francs. One player even found the money buried in his mother’s garden. As a result of this Marseille were stripped of their title and relegated to Ligue 2, with some players and key members of the club also facing jail time. Although they kept their Champions League the award has a moral asterisk next to it as a result of these events.
