Olympique Lyonnais, commonly referred to as Lyon or simply OL, is a French professional football club based in the city of Lyon. The club was founded in 1950 following the merger of two local clubs, Lyon Olympique Universitaire and FC Lyon. Lyon is commonly known as ‘Les Gones,’ which is a term for ‘kids’ in the Lyonnais dialect. The nickname was adopted by the club in the 1980s as a way of expressing its identity as a youthful and dynamic team. Lyon is based in the city of Lyon, which is located in the east-central region of France. The club plays its home matches at the Groupama Stadium, which is situated in the eastern suburb of Decines-Charpieu. The stadium has a capacity of 59,186 spectators.

Lyon History

Lyons’ early years were marked by a lack of success, as the club struggled to establish itself  in the French football hierarchy. It was not until the late 1980s and early 1990s that Lyon began to make its mark, winning its first major trophy, the French Cup, in 1994. The club won seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles between 2002 and 2008, establishing itself as the dominant force in French football. During this period, Lyon also enjoyed significant success in European competition, reaching semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2010.

The current owner of Lyon is US businessman John Textor who has acquired a stake of 77.49% in the club. 

Lyon Manager

Lyons current manager is Italian coach Fabio Grosso. In 2017 he was appointed manager of Serie B club Bari. In 2018 he became manager of Hellas Veronas however his stay was short lived. He then became manager of Serie A side Brescia but was sacked very shortly after. He then went to Switzerland based club Sion before joining Frosinone and helping them win Serie B. He then joined Lyon in September 2023.

Lyon Drama

In January of 2023 there was controversy surrounding Lyons signing Dejan Lovren. This controversy arose after a video of Lovren and Brozovic chanting a song which has been labelled as fascist came out. However, when current manager Laurent Blanc was asked about it he said ‘I look at the footballing side.’
