Brest History

Brest’s early years were spent playing in the lower leagues of French football, but the team began to gain some success in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1979, they won the French second division to earn promotion to Ligue 1 for the first time in their history. In the early 2000s, Brest found themselves struggling financially. This led to a period of decline for the club, with several years spent languishing in the lower reaches of the French football league system. However, in 2004, a group of supporters decided to take matters into their own hands and formed a supporters’ association to help fund the club. This initiative proved successful, and in 2005, the association was able to purchase a significant stake in the club. Under the stewardship of the supporters’ association, Brest began to turn their fortunes around on the pitch. The team achieved promotion to Ligue 2 in 2006, and then to Ligue 1 in 2010, marking the first time in the club’s history that they had earned promotion to the top flight in consecutive seasons.

Who Owns Brest

The club is currently owned by the American businessman Frank McCourt, who purchased the team in 2019. McCourt is also the former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.
