Real Betis History

Real Betis was founded in 1907 by a group of students from the Polytechnics School of Seville. The club initially played in blue and white stripes, but changed to green and white in 1914, which has become the clubs traditional colours.

In the early years, Real Betis played in regional leagues before joining the Spanish Second Division in 1929. The club achieved promotion to the top flight of Spanish football, La Liga, for the first time in 1932. In the 1934-35 season, Real Betis won their only La Liga title to date, finishing one point ahead of Real Madrid.

After the Spanish Civil War, Real Betis struggled to maintain their position in the top flight and were relegated to the Second Division in 1942. The club bounced back and forth between the two divisions for the next few decades, achieving promotion to La Liga on several occasions but failing to establish themselves as a consistent force in the top flight.

Real Betis enjoyed a successful period in the 1970s, winning their first Copa del Rey trophy in 1977 under coach Rafael Iriondo. The team featured players such as Julio Cardeñosa, Hipólito Rincón, and Carlos Ruiz, who became fan favourites.

The club’s fortunes declined in the 1980s and 1990s, with Real Betis suffering relegation to the Second Division on several occasions. However, the team enjoyed a revival in the early 2000s under coach Juande Ramos, winning their second Copa del Rey trophy in 2005 and finishing fourth in La Liga in 2005-06 to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history.

Since then, Real Betis has established themselves as a consistent presence in La Liga, finishing in the top half of the table on several occasions.
