Granada History

Granada FC was founded on April 14, 1931. The club has a long and storied history that dates back to its early years, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Spain. Granada CF played its first official match in the 1931-1932 season. On September 20, 1931, they made their debut in the Spanish football league. The result of their first-ever official game was a 3-3 draw against the club Sevilla FC. In their debut season, Granada CF finished in 6th place in the regional Andalusian championship.

Throughout the years, Granada CF has experienced various ups and downs, competing in different tiers of Spanish football. They have had notable successes in domestic competitions and have had the opportunity to participate in top-tier leagues like La Liga.

Who Owns Granada

Granada FC was owned by a Chinese conglomerate called Link International Sports Limited, led by Jiang Lizhang. The Chinese ownership took over the club in 2016, injecting significant investment to help the club progress both on and off the field.

Granada Manager

The current Granada manager is Paco Lopez, a Spanish manager who has managed at many different Spanish clubs. He has been at many clubs over the last 19 years and has worked for every Villareal youth setup and Levantes. He was able to get Granada promoted last season and will now aim to keep them up this season.

Biggest Granada Transfers

Granada being a club that have spent a lot of time in the 3rd and 2nd tiers of Spanish football they haven’t had the budgets to bring in the most expensive players. With this being said the record arrivals have been:

  • Luis Suarez from Watford for £7.00m
  • Matias Arezo from River Plate for £5.70m
  • Luis Maximiano from Sporting for £5.50m
  • Youssef El Arabi from Al-Hilal for £5.00m
  • Darwin Machis from Udinese for £5.00m

The record departures have been:

  • Isaac Success to Watford for £15.00m
  • Luis Maximiano to Lazio for £10.26m
  • Luis Suarez to Marseille for £10.00m
  • Guilherme Siqueira to Atletico Madrid for £10.00m
  • Ruben Rochina to Rubin Kazan for £10.00m

Granada Drama

The takeover the club received has been instrumental in getting them back into La Liga however that didn’t always seem the case. Back in 2020 the Chinese businessman had become embroiled in controversy. He had been accused of unpaid taxes and it seemed as though he and his company would be going into bankruptcy. Luckily he was able to avoid this and Granada have made it to La Liga.

Who Plays For Granada Now

Granada have a lower standard squad then many other La Liga teams and they will need to strengthen further this transfer window. In defence they have goalkeeper Andre Ferreira and defenders Jesus Vallejo, Ignasi Miquel, Miguel Rubio, Raul Torrente, Alpha Diounkou, Carlos Neva and Ricard Sanchez.

In midfield they have Gerard Gumbau, Njegos Petrovic, Yann Bodiger, Victor Meseguer, Sergio Ruiz and Oscar Melendo. In attack they have Myrto Uzuni, Bryan Zaragoza, Alberto Perea, Antonio Puertas, Alberto Soro, Jose Callejo and new signings Shon Weissman, Famara Diedhiou.

What Have Granada Won

Granada have bounced from the 3rd to the 1st tier of Spanish football and as a result haven’t won a lot. They have won 4 Spanish 2nd Tier Championships as well as other trophies from lesser divisions. On top of this they have finished as runners-up in the Copa Del rey once.

Granada 2023/24 Season Predictions

This season we think Granada will struggle and as a result we predict them to get relegated or at best just avoid relegation. Their squad isn’t the strongest and there are other quality teams in La Liga.
