Girona History

Girona FC has a long history in Spanish football, having played in various tiers of the Spanish league system. The club spent most of its early years playing in the lower leagues, but in the 2016-17 season, they achieved promotion to La Liga for the first time in their history. In their debut season in La Liga, Girona finished in 10th place, which was a remarkable achievement for a newly promoted club. In the following season, Girona FC struggled to maintain their form and were ultimately relegated back to the second tier of Spanish football. However, the club has since bounced back and secured promotion to La Liga once again for the 2022-23 season. Girona FC has also had some notable achievements in the Copa del Rey, reaching the quarter-finals in the 2018-19 season before being knocked out by Real Madrid.

Who Owns Girona

In 2021, Girona FC was acquired by the City Football Group (CFG), a global football organisation that owns several football clubs around the world, including Manchester City FC in the English Premier League. CFG acquired 44.3% of the club’s shares, with the remaining shares being held by a group of local investors. The acquisition by CFG has allowed Girona FC to benefit from the groups expertise in football management, while also strengthening the clubs financial positions.

Girona Manager

Gironas current manager is Miguel Angel Sanchez, otherwise known as Michel for short. His first managerial role was at Rayo Vallecano where was able to keep them in the Segunda Division and then win the league the following season. He then had a poor season where he was sacked as the club sat in the relegation zone. He then took over Huesca and had a similar time there to his last job. He helped them win promotion but was then sacked as the club sat in last place. He then took over Girona and helped them get promoted. This time however instead of being relegated he guided Girona to finishing 10th in the league.

Girona Drama

Back in October 2022 Girona played a controversial match against Real Madrid in which it ended 1-1. Real Madrid took the lead however after a controversial VAR decision which saw Girona get awarded a penalty they were able to equalise. Real Madrid then had a goal ruled out because of VAR and Toni Kroos received a red card late on. A well deserved point for Girona but a very frustrating night for Real Madrid who felt as though they were robbed of another 2 points.

Girona 2023/24 Season Predictions

This season we predict Girona will finish mid-table. They have a decent manager and decent squad that we believe will allow them to avoid relegation. However, with other teams improving it seems unlikely they will push on any higher than 10th.
