Almeria History

Almeria’sAlmera history is relatively short compared to other Spanish clubs, but the team has had some notable achievements in its short existence. The club has spent much of its early years in the lower divisions of Spanish football, but in 2007, Almeria earned promotion to La Liga for the first time in its history. In their first season in La Liga, Almeria surprised many by finishing in eighth place, which was the club’s best-ever finish in the top flight. However, the team was unable to sustain its success and was relegated back to the second division in 2011. Almeria returned to La Liga in 2013 and managed to stay in the top flight for several seasons before being relegated again in 2016. The club spent three seasons in the second division before earning promotion back to La Liga in 2019 under the ownership of Turki Al-Sheikh. Overall, Almerias history is still being written, and the club will be looking to establish itself as a regular participant in the top tier of Spanish football in the coming years.

Who Owns Almeria

Almeria has changed ownership several times throughout its history. In 2019, the club was acquired by Saudi Arabian businessman Turki Al-Sheikh. Al-Sheikh has invested heavily in the club, bringing in new players and upgrading the facilities to help Almeria compete at the highest level of Spanish football.

Almeria Manager

Almerias current manager is Vicente Moreno. Vicente Moreno started his career at Xerez, where he helped them avoid relegation. He then joined Gimnastic and helped them get promoted. 2 seasons later, he joined Mallorca, where he achieved 2 consecutive promotions, followed by relegation from La Liga in his 3rd. He then joined Espanyol and helped them get promoted as champions. He later joined Al Shabab before joining Almeria this transfer window. He is a manager who is incredible at helping teams achieve promotion, but does he have what it takes to keep Almeria up in La Liga this season?

Biggest Almeria Transfers

Almeria is a club that hasn’t spent a lot of time in La Liga, and as a result, their record transfers are not very high. With this being said, their most expensive signings have been:

  • Darwin Nunez from Penarol for £15.25m
  • Umar Sadiq from Partizan for £9.00m
  • Arvin Appiah from Nottingham Forest for £8.85m
  • Luis Suarez from Marseille for £8.00m
  • El Bilal Toure from Stade Reims for £8.00m

Almeria Drama

In 2019 there was some controversy surrounding controversial Almeria owner Turki Al-Sheik. The owner caused controversy by posting a picture on Twitter of a woman wearing a burka, posing with a car won in a raffle holding an Almeria shirt. What was a seemingly innocent post did not go down well with some Almeria fans who did not want the club to be associated with the burka. There are many restrictions on women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, where the owner is from. One example is that women are not allowed to attend football matches alone, and even if they do attend, they have to go to a separate section from the men. These kinds of rules do not sit well with many fans, and therefore, they don’t want the club associated with the nation.

Almeria 2023/24 Season Predictions

This season we predict Almeria will struggle. Their manager does not have much experience keeping teams in La Liga, and they have a young and below-average quality squad. However, the relegation battle was very tight last season, with only 3 points separating 18th and 13th. There may be other teams who have worse seasons which will allow Almeria to get some much-needed points and stay up.
