Alaves History

Founded in 1920, the initial name of the club was Sport Friend; however, on 23 January 1921, the name was changed to Deportivo Alaves. Alaves became the first club to earn promotion from the Segunda Division. They have since spent their history being a sort of yo-yo club that bounces from the top Division to the Second Division and even sometimes the 3rd Division. Their best-ever finish came in 2000 when they finished 6th; however, 3 seasons later, they were relegated once more. The most notable period of time for Alaves came in 2001 when they reached the final of the UEFA Cup, beating Inter Milan, Rayo Vallecano and FC Kaiserslautern before losing to Liverpool 5-4.

Who Owns Alaves

Baskonia is the current owner of Deportivo Alaves, saving them from bankruptcy after their previous owner fled the country to avoid the club’s debt. Baskonia owns more than 75% of the club and has experience running sports teams, as they also own the basketball team Saski Baskonia.

Alaves Manager

The current manager of Deportivo Alaves is Luis Garcia. Garcia started his career at amateur clubs and began to make his way up the different Spanish leagues. He ended up helping Levante return to La Liga and guiding them to a 14th-place finish the following season. He then managed Getafe before moving to different Asian clubs. He then joined Villareal in 2018 but was only manager for 1 month. He then headed back to Asia. In 2020 he joined Mallorca and helped them gain promotion. He was then dismissed in 2022, and he went on to join Deportivo Alaves, helping them achieve promotion.

Alaves Drama

During last season’s 2. Ligas play-off final Levante were set to earn promotion after coming into the final game after a goalless first leg. Due to Levante finishing a point higher, another draw would’ve seen them earn promotion, and it looked as though that was going to be the case until a dramatic 129th-minute winner from Alaves. This goal would see the club earn promotion back to the top Spanish league.

Who Plays For Alaves Now

Alaves doesn’t have a very high-quality squad, as though they have only just been promoted from 2. Liga. Their defence features Antonio Sivera, Jesus Owono, Abdel Abqar, Nikola Maras, Aleksandar Sedlar, Rafa Marin, Ruben Duarte, Javi Lopez and Andoni Gorosabel. Their midfield features players such as Antonio Blanco, Carlos Benavidez, Ander Guevara, Jon Guridi and Abdallahi Mahmoud. Their attack features Luis Rioja, Abde Rebbach, Xeber Alkain, Giuliano Simeone, Miguel De La Fuente, Kike Garcia and Mamadou Sylla.

What Have Alaves Won

Deportivo Alaves are a team that has spent a lot of their history in lower leagues. As a result, their trophy cabinet is rather small. They have won 4 Spanish 2nd Tier Championships.

Alaves 2023/24 Season Predictions

This season we predict that Deportivo Alaves will struggle. They do not have a very strong squad, and there are simply other teams with better quality. Although their manager, Luis Garcia, was able to keep Levante up in 14th place after being promoted, he has otherwise been a manager who isn’t good enough to compete in La Liga. For these reasons, we predict they will be in a relegation battle for the majority of the season.
