In 2019 he became the interim manager again before being signed on a permanent deal. They parted ways in 2021, and he became manager of Werder Bremen. In 2018 Werder Bremen was involved in drama after a drone spy scandal where the club admitted to attempting to steal secrets from the Hoffenheim training ground. Just before a game against Hoffenheim, an unannounced drone was found above the Hoffenheim training ground. It was later confirmed to be from opponents Werder Bremen who were trying to get an unfair advantage.
