SC Freiburg History

In the early years of the club’s history, SC Freiburg played in local and regional leagues. They were one of the founding members of the Oberliga Süd, one of the top leagues in Germany at the time, in 1945. The club remained in the Oberliga Süd until the establishment of the Bundesliga in 1963. SC Freiburg did not immediately qualify for the Bundesliga and had to wait until 1978 for their first appearance in the top flight. They were relegated after just one season, but bounced back and forth between the first and second divisions over the next few decades.

In recent years, SC Freiburg has established themselves as a mid-table team in the Bundesliga, known for their attacking style of play and the development of young talent. The club has also been recognized for their sustainable and community-oriented approach to football, which has helped them build a loyal fan base both in Freiburg and beyond.

The current manager of SC Freiburg is Christian Streich. Streich has worked as a youth manager and coach at Freiburg for 16 years. In 2011 however he was given the position of first team manager. He was able to keep them up in the first season after an unbeaten run of 9 games. The next season they finished 5th and qualified for the Europa League. SC Freiburg Drama

In 2020 Freiburg ultras won a legal battle over the use of a nazi banner. During a game in the 2020 season Freiburg ultras held a sign calling local politician Dubravko Mandic a nazi. Dubravko Mandic is a member of the far-right, populist alternative for the Germany (AfD) party. The prosecutor’s office said that while ‘disparaging’ the banner is ‘recognisable in an objective connection with the political activities of the injured party Mandic’. As a result of this charges were dropped towards the Freiburg ultras.

SC Freiburg 2023/24 Season Predictions

This season we predict Freiburg will finish mid-table. They will have to balance the league with the Europa League and they don’t have the best squad depth. They have had inconsistent finishes, rarely being able to establish themself as a top club. Despite two top table finishes we think this season they will fall back down and finish mid-table.
