Bayer Leverkusen History

Bayer Leverkusen was founded on July 1, 1904, by employees of the pharmaceutical company Bayer AG. The club started out as a sports club, with football being one of its many sections. In the early years, the club mostly played against other local teams and did not have much success.

In the 1950s, Leverkusen started to make a name for itself in German football. The club won the Lower Rhine Cup in 1951 and 1958, and in 1959, they reached the final of the German amateur championship. Leverkusen’s first promotion to the Bundesliga came in 1979, but they were immediately relegated after just one season.

The 1980s saw Leverkusen fluctuating between the first and second divisions of German football. In 1986, they won their first major trophy, the DFB-Pokal (German Cup), by defeating Bayern Munich in the final. The 1990s saw Leverkusen establish itself as a top team in the Bundesliga, finishing as runners-up in the League in 1997, 1999, and 2000.

Leverkusen reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2002 but suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Real Madrid, losing 2-1. In the same season, Leverkusen finished runners-up in the Bundesliga and reached the final of the DFB-Pokal, only to lose both matches. The 2000s saw Leverkusen consistently competing in European competitions, including reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League multiple times.

Who Owns Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen is owned by Bayer, a German multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. They became owners of Bayer Leverkusen in 1904 when the company decided to help employers create a sports club. This sports club later developed into the club we know today.

Bayer Leverkusen Manager

Bayer Leverkusen’s current manager is Xabi Alonso. Xabi Alonso has played for Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. He is often regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation. His first managerial position was managing Real Sociedad B, which, in his first season, helped them get promoted to the Segunda Division. In his second season, however, he was relegated to the Segunda Division B. In 2022 however, he left and later joined Bayer Leverkusen. When he took over, the club was second from bottom after 8 games. By the end of the season, they had finished in the semi-finals of the Europa League and finished 6th in the League.

Bayer Leverkusen Drama

This isn’t so much of a drama but, instead, a very interesting story that led to lots of stress for Leverkusen fans. Last season in a game against Bayern Munich, Leverkusen player Amine Adli was booked for simulation twice, and both decisions were overturned. Twice Adli went down in the box and booked. In both instances, after a VAR check, their decision was overturned, and a penalty was given. They scored both penalties and won the game 2-1.
